Newer health studies have been completed by the Women’s Health Initiative dietary modification trial, and the results of this expensive research initiative have been unexpected. A sizable amount of funding went into this long study, and a follow up report expected to find results that were disease fighting. Most of the results of the study were inconclusive or did not prove that a low fat diet directly fights cancer.
Cancer Fighting Has Other Methods
Certain programs that were included in the study set out to find the cancer fighting connections between a low fat diet and a reduction in the following cancers:
- Breast cancer was one form of cancer, that was included in the sample of patients participating in the study. The participants ate three meals a day that consisted of fruits, vegetables and grains. The women were followed eight years.
- Colorectal cancer was another form of cancer, that was followed for a set number of years. Each of the participants ate a specific diet that was rich in low fat foods.
- Heart disease was followed, for a majority of the women who agreed to be a part of the research study. Current disease prevention guidelines were followed, and these guidelines included a diet that was low fat.
Cancer Fighting Diets
- A diet that is plant based is usually recommended for its cancer fighting qualities. Plants have more fiber and more cancer fighting nutrients. Less fat is another factor that can be included within a cancer prevention diet strategy. Foods that come from plants include vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and beans. The less you process these foods, the better, since cooking takes away a significant portion of their healthy ingredients.
- Fiber tends to be an effective cancer fighting food ingredient. This type of food group is healthy for your digestion, and can help to eliminate any harmful foods or toxins that may have been digested. Fiber is found in fruits and vegetables. Whole grains like whole wheat, oats and brown rice help to keep your colon healthy.
- Be sure to cut down on eating too much meat. Vegetarians tend to not be diagnosed with cancers as often. Meats do not have as much fiber and other ingredients that have cancer protective properties. Meat tends to have a high level of saturated fat, either included in the meat itself or used to cook it.
Fats Can Be Harmful
Modern methods of testing our fat intake, and the subsequent development of cancers, have not shown a direct and causal link. However, other diet concerns have included fat among those food ingredients that have a negative effect. There are certain foods that are saturated in fat content, and excessive weight gain has been linked to this form of intake. Weight gain or excessive weight gain has been connected to heart disease, diabetes and a lowered immune system. The following fats can be avoided or restricted, in order for your daily caloric intake to be more productive:
- Red meat, whole milk, butter and eggs are always listed as foods saturated in fats. This type of food can be restricted or eliminated. Skim milk and margarine are effective cooking substitutes. Chicken and fish may be served as substitutes for red meats, for example. Eggs may need to be restricted to only a few times a month.
- Cooking with olive oil or canola oil is a good substitute for regular vegetable oil. You can trim the fat around your cut of red meat and not eat the skin or your chicken selection.
- Nuts and seeds need to be added to your diet, as healthy substitutes for salty snacks and crackers.
- Your salads can be more heart healthy, if you use flaxseed oil instead of richer cheese dressings.
- Fast foods and fried foods are high in trans fats. French fries, doughnuts and fried deserts tend to add on empty calories that do nothing nutritionally. Food, that your body does not digest, will be stored as fat, and excess weight will be a new problem.
- Fish is a meat that is not high in fat content. It has its own nutritional protein benefit, that is unlike most other meat products. Fish does not contain an excessive amount of fat and tends to be filling. Salmon, herring and cod are three types of fish that are good food choices.
There are certain types of additional foods that are classified as cancer fighting. These foods include those rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium. Spices, including basil and rosemary, can add valuable nutrition to your diet. Water helps all of your bodily processes and helps to stimulate your immune system. Be sure to eat a portion of your fruits and vegetables raw and not processed, since you will ingest a richer amount of vitamins and minerals this way.
